Nearly 40 years ago, Evergreen Preschool was founded by four women in the Vergennes area who wanted to create a preschool experience for their children. From its very beginning, Evergreen has held true to its core philosophy: children learn best through play!

It is our belief that …

• A child’s self-directed play is their primary and most important mode of learning, and it ensures a strong foundation for personal and intellectual growth.

• Nurturing a child’s physical, social-emotional, and intellectual development is essential for their personal, life-long success.

• An environment, whether it be indoors or out in the natural world, which is warm, welcoming, dynamic, challenging, and safe encourages the greatest possible climate for learning.

• A cooperative relationship, with reciprocal communication between teachers and families, allows for a deeper involvement with a child’s education. Responsive, reflective teachers effectively meet the developmental and individual needs of all children.

• An emergent curriculum, developed in response to children’s questions and interests, ensures a connection to and ownership of their knowledge.  Curriculum and learning objectives should be based upon solid, educational philosophy and evidence-based, early childhood practices.

• A co-teaching method enhances the opportunities for a child to approach ideas from multiple perspectives.

Evergreen Preschool strives to provide an experience that:

• Encourages the role of discovery, exploration, and curiosity through supporting a child’s natural desire to play in order to make sense of their world;

• Nurtures healthy choices of behavior including exercise, nutrition, and social engagement;

• Promotes creativity to enhance communication, problem-solving, and expression;

• And inspires families to take an active role in their children’s education.

Our programs....

Evergreen Preschool offers two programs for children ages 3 to 5. To enroll, children must be 3 years old by September 1st of the current school year.

• 2-Day Program: Meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays. This program accommodates up to 17 children.

• 3-Day Program: Meets on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. This program accommodates up to 18 children.

Both programs run from 8:00 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. For more details about daily routines, please refer to the "Our Day" section.

Extended Day Option:
We also offer an extended day program for up to six children per class, available at an additional charge. The extended program runs from 1:15 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
